CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman City Council on Monday approved resolutions to complete several years of pavement repairs and upgrades at Cullman Regional Airport, and pave the way for future expansion of facilities and services. The council voted to enter contracts with Goodwyn Mills Cawood (GMC) for engineering services for the reconstruction of the apron (aircraft parking area) and hangars to be constructed on a new taxiway, for which a timetable has not been set.
“It’s a pretty exciting time at the airport right now,” said Airport Director Ben Harrison. “Since 2014 we’ve been in a reconstruction and maintenance phase of our buildings, redoing runways, redoing taxiways, etc. What we’re going into now is our growth phase. So we’re going to be able to rebuild an apron, which is a huge piece of our growth, and larger aircraft will be able to park on this apron. We’re going to build – put a taxiway in now on some undeveloped lands. We have about a 19-acre parcel; once that taxi lane is put in, we can start developing hangars on either side.
“So the next 10 years of the airport – we just finished an airport layout plan called a ALP – the next 10 years of the airport, we should really be advancing in the growth phase of the airport to keep up with the demands of aircraft that are probably trying to come here and businesses, etc.”
Cullman Regional Airport in March received a congressional allocated grant in the amount of $4,177,000 for the apron reconstruction project through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Grants-in-Aid for Airports program. Cullman’s was one of only six grants received in the state of Alabama under this funding allocation.
Cullman Regional Airport is a joint venture between Cullman County and the City of Cullman.
Other council business
The council also:
- Approved a resolution to enter into an agreement with Terracon Consultants, Inc. to perform borings on Graham Street Southwest
- Held a first reading of an ordinance to annex property located at 2100 Main Ave. SW into the city limits of Cullman as B-2 business district. The council took no action, and can vote on the measure at its next meeting.
- Set a public hearing on June 24, 2024, at 7 p.m. for an ordinance to rezone the Elrod property located on 309 Olive St. SW, behind Lin Garden on Olive Street, from residential to business
The Cullman City Council will hold its next meeting at 7 p.m. on Monday, June 2, 2024, in the city hall auditorium. The public is invited to attend.
