Columbus High withdraws offer to purchase nearby public elementary school
Columbus High School has withdrawn its proposal to buy a nearby public elementary school, according to a statement from Miami-Dade County Public Schools shared Tuesday. The private Catholic school had made an unsolicited proposal to purchase or enter into a long-term lease for the property where Banyan Elementary is located. The elementary school sits across SW 87th Avenue from Columbus’ main campus. Columbus High had planned to demolish the existing school and build new facilities on the site, including an “aquatic center.” A committee of the Miami-Dade school board recommended that the district reject the school’s unsolicited offer at a meeting last week and the full board was poised to officially reject the bid at its Wednesday meeting. That official rejection is no longer needed, according to the district’s statement. “Because the proposal has been withdrawn, the Board will no longer need to consider or vote on the rejection of the item, and it has been removed from tomorrow’s agenda. Thank you to everyone in the community who stayed engaged, submitted input, and advocated for our local schools throughout this process,” the district’s statement reads. Banyan Elementary had about 350 students last school year . Its most recent state-calculated utilization

Vandy chancellor says great universities to help shape Wall Street South
Carnegie Mellon University’s decision to establish a campus in Miami is good news for South Florida. Its plans are another confirmation of the remarkable changes underway across the region. South Florida’s rise as “Wall Street South” has made it an increasingly important center for finance, while defense technology and other emerging industries are establishing a growing presence. Companies are expanding here, and with them are coming people with the experience and ambition to build what comes next. For South Florida, including West Palm Beach, where Vanderbilt announced in 2024 that it would move forward with plans for a new graduate campus, the opportunity is to build on this period of growth in ways that will endure for generations. Research universities have an important role in doing that. Great research universities and strong innovation ecosystems have a mutually reinforcing relationship. I saw that firsthand during my time at Stanford in the 1990s, when the internet economy was taking shape through the close relationship between Stanford and Silicon Valley. The same dynamic is evident in Boston, where institutions such as MIT have been deeply intertwined with the region’s leadership in biotechnology. Higher education is a catalyst and a conduit for innovation. The
