Bagel Bakery owner says payment problems persist at City Food Hall

The owner of The Bagel Bakery in Gainesville says City Food Hall owes him about $4,000 in unpaid revenue, raising concerns about the midtown food hall's payment practices and whether other vendors are experiencing similar problems. Jason Cole, owner of The Bagel Bakery, told The Sun in an Oct. 27 phone interview that he had not received a payment since Oct. 5 and said he was aware of other businesses at the food hall experiencing similar issues. Cole also owns The Bagel Bakery at 4113 NW 16th Blvd. Cole, who opened a location at the food hall in August, said his business entered into an agreement with City Food Hall that required vendors to use a shared payment system. He said the food hall is operated by founder and CEO Peter Rounce and occupies space on the bottom floor of The Standard, 1360 W. University Ave. Under the arrangement, Cole said sales revenue from vendors went into a central account before businesses were paid their weekly sales, minus agreed-upon fees. Cole said 18% was deducted from sales, including a 15% fee for City Food Hall and another 3% to support employees working in common areas, such as janitorial staff. While

New Marshtackie Florida Cafe puts St. Johns farm bounty on the menu

A St. Augustine restaurateur celebrates fresh, locally sourced seasonal fare in the heart of St. Johns County farm country with a new restaurant named for a rare Florida horse breed. Marshtackie Florida Cafe will open Friday, Nov. 6, open at 420 N. Main St., in downtown Hastings amid the community's annual Fall Harvest Festival. The cafe is the second restaurant from Jennifer Ashton, owner of the popular Juniper Market at 48 San Marco Ave. in St. Augustine's historic Uptown neighborhood. “Hastings’ passionate growers and the abundance of fresh, seasonal produce are incredibly inspiring to me. I love using what’s in season to create something delicious,” Ashton said in a news release announcing the Marshtackie's opening. “Marshtackie is a place where the community can come together to enjoy good food and good company. We’re here to serve our locals and be part of the neighborhood," she said of opening in the community also known as the “Potato Capital of Florida." The new cafe comes roughly 14 years after Ashton open Juniper Market intially tucked into a corner of furniture import retailer Coastal Traders. Discount grocery giant Aldi continues its Florida invasion, with five more Florida stores coming in the next few weeks to help stretch your shopping dollars . Stores in Madison and Zephyrhills open Thursday, Oct. 29, while more locations in Longwood, Sebring, and Tavares open Nov. 12. At each grand opening, the first 200 customers in line will get a Golden Ticket that could be worth up to $100, and an eco-friendly bag full of Aldi goodies. For the rest of the day, anyone can get a free Aldi shopping tote bag while supplies last. Doors open at 9 a.m., but the grand openings are generally at 8:45 a.m. Shop Aldi with Instacart Counting these locations, there will soon be 355 Aldi stores in Florida , more than in any other state. The German-owned chain has opened about 60 new locations here this year, on top of 60 in 2025, as part of its goal to reach 3,200 stores nationwide by the end of 2028. Aiming to fill a void, NY kosher-style deli debuts in Jacksonville

Aiming to fill a nearly two decade-long dining void, a highly anticipated New York kosher-style deli is ready to debut its authentic scratch-made pastrami, corned beef, Matzah ball soup, latkes, bagels and more in Jacksonville. Bell & Layton's Delicatessen and Provisions celebrates its grand opening Sunday, Nov. 8 at 10140 San Jose Blvd., in Mandarin. The deli and bakery from co-owners Brian Bell and Willam Layton is believed to be the first-of-its-kind in Jacksonville since the legendary Worman's Bakery & Deli shut its doors in August 2009 after more than 85 years. "We really wanted a place for people to come and taste the food that they had at their grandmother's. We wanted that sense of community. All the dishes that we have, kind of bring you back there when you walk through our door," Layton told the Times-Union. Bell traced their inspiration, in part, to Worman's. 'I'm still in disbelief,' Palm Coast chef says of Food Network debut

Long before Montanna Brumfield stepped on the set of Food Network’s “Holiday Baking Championship,” she and her younger brother were staging cooking shows of their own. However, their three-cheese omelet was hardly television material, the Palm Coast resident told The News-Journal. The eggs burned, the results became a lasting family joke, and the young girl who grew up watching Rachael Ray and Emeril Lagasse continued to envision a future in food. This week, that future appeared right on her own TV screen — and Brumfield, taking in the full-circle moment, could barely bring herself to sit down. What is the 'Holiday Baking Championship?'
