GC Sports Difference Maker | Caleb Scroggins, Statesboro Football
For high school football players, the path to Friday night stardom rarely follows a straight line. Some athletes step onto the varsity field as freshmen and immediately claim the spotlight. For others, the journey requires patience, quiet consistency, and an unshakeable belief from a coaching staff that sees potential before it fully blossoms. For Statesboro High School senior defensive back and free safety Caleb Scroggins , the journey belongs firmly in the latter category. As a young senior who won't turn 18 until after graduation, Scroggins has grown into the definitive heartbeat of the Blue Devils' defense. Standing at a towering 6-foot-3, he patrols the secondary with a blend of length, range, and physical toughness that has made him a true difference-maker on the field. When Scroggins first entered high school, Head Coach Matt Dobson pulled him aside and shared a vision of leadership that the young freshman had a hard time believing at the time. "When I came into high school, I wasn't expecting to play as much," Scroggins said. "Coach Dobson always told me that I was the most likely to be a leader through how good I was with the team and how I coached my teammates.

The Portal Panthers' Flag Football team opened the 2026 season against the McIntosh Academy Buccaneers on Monday afternoon. Portal was able to come away with a 47-0 win to start the campaign off right. The Panthers used a big first half to go up 34-0 going into halftime. Rebie Grace Pylant , Katielyn Yates, London Blackmon , and McKinley Motes all found the endzone in the first half. On the defensive side, Motes and Makayla Wiggins caught interceptions giving the ball back to their offense. Portal returns five seniors from last year's team and enters the 2026 season looking to build on another postseason appearance. The Panthers advanced to the second round of the GHSA Division III state playoffs last season before falling to Locust Grove, bringing their season to an end. With an experienced group returning, Portal started its new campaign about as well as it could have, putting together a complete performance on both sides of the ball and earning its first win of the season. The Panthers will look to carry that momentum forward as they continue the 2026 season. Up Next: The Panthers will go on the road to take on the Tattnall County Warriors on
