Vaughn Local Government Column: It is Friday but Sunday’s A Comin in Hampton County
I realize that is a strange title. Please stick with me for a couple of paragraphs and perhaps you will understand. The title “It is Friday but Sunday’s A Comin” is a poem written by Reverend S. M. Lockridge. Lockridge was an African-American Pastor in San Deigo, California. Our Sunday School teacher Dr. Francis Mills read the poem to our class last Sunday. The theme of the poem instantly drew a parallel with me as to the issues going on in Hampton County currently. The poem basically portrays the resurrection of Jesus in a very powerful way. The Friday of Jesus’ death was dark and disappointing for mankind. We have experienced some dark “Fridays” here in Hampton County. Faith is the cornerstone of the poem and I think that is why the poem resonates with me. Hampton County must have faith for us to move forward from the dark pall cast over the County presently.
