Minnesota sending team to help Iowa with tornado recovery
GREENFIELD, Iowa (FOX 9) - Minnesota will send a team to aid Iowa as it recovers from tornadoes that struck the state last week, Governor Walz announced last week. Walz activated members of Minnesota's All Hazards Incident Management Team to aid Iowa first responders in recovery efforts in the city of Greenfield. The small city was devastated last week as an EF-4 tornado tore through the town, knocking down homes and other buildings. Four people died in the destruction and dozens were injured.
Orient-Macksburg considering dissolving nearly 65-year-old school district
(Orient) -- A KMAland school district could shutter its doors amidst declining enrollment and funding shortfalls. The Orient-Macksburg Community School District and school board members held a public forum on the school's future last week, with one possibility including dissolving the district. Orient merged with Macksburg in 1960 to form the current district, which covers parts of Adair, Madison, Adams, and Union counties. Orient-Macksburg would be the first school in Iowa to dissolve since 2015, when Corwith-Wesley closed its doors. Orient-Macksburg School Superintendent Jeff Kruse tells KMA News that while it is not an easy decision, there are several factors the board is considering for dissolving the nearly 65-year-old school district, primarily surrounding staffing and enrollment numbers.
Lake Icaria escapes tornado's wrath
(Corning) -- It was a typical Memorial Day weekend at Lake Icaria State Park--despite a major scare earlier in the week. Last Tuesday's EF-4 tornado that touched down in Adams County and eventually tore through Greenfield and Adair County barely missed the popular recreational area north of Corning. Adams County Conservation Director Travis Paul tells KMA News despite the close call, the park escaped damage.
