CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) — A car crashed into a Dunkin’ in Cranston Tuesday morning.

Crews responded to the scene around 6:30 a.m. on Reservoir Avenue and found the car entirely in the coffee shop with shattered glass.

Police say the driver had his learner’s permit and was learning how to drive.

When he put the car in drive instead of reverse, the passenger said to hit the brake, police said, but instead, he hit the gas and went through the front window into the counter.

Brian Haibom told 12 News his mother works in the building and is glad she wasn’t hit.

“I’m happy she didn’t get hit. That would’ve not been good. I think they said it was a car malfunction,” he said. “America doesn’t just run on Dunkin’, cars do too.”

No injuries were reported.

Police said there were no signs the driver was impaired.

“First and foremost, we are grateful nobody was injured as a result of this accident,” a spokesperson from Dunkin’ told 12 News. “This location will be temporarily closed as we assess the damage and we look forward to reopening safely and serving our guests as soon as possible.”
