CRANFORD, NJ – Like many moms, Jessica Dreyer loves whatever her son gets her for Mother’s Day. “He can get me a hanging basket and every time I see it I think, ‘Awww, he thought about what I'd like.’”

As the last remaining operating farm in Union County, Dreyer’s has many repeat customers leading up to Mother’s Day. “One woman comes in every year and buys coleus plants for her mother,” Jessica said. “She also buys one marigold as a joke, because her mom hates them.”

But many customers are not so sure. If you don’t know what to buy and want a low-maintenance, high-flowering plant, Jessica suggests begonias, petunias, Dipladenia, or Monovia.

In terms of flowering shrubs, Jon at Dreyer’s suggests lilacs, viburnums, and azaleas. “We also have a really nice and fragrant “Korean Spice” viburnum and some spectacular “Popcorn” viburnum,” said Jon. Plus, they’ve stocked up on rhododendron, hydrangea, and clematis.

If your mom is more into edible gardening, Dreyer’s has some cold weather-tolerant plants like kale, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and lettuces, with warm weather-loving tomatoes and eggplants coming out of the greenhouses by mid-May.

Can’t wait until harvest-time to eat? “Our sesame noodles and pies, both sweet and savory, are really popular,” said Jessica. “As soon as we reopened, people came in looking for chocolate milk and donuts.” Sounds like the perfect Mother's Day breakfast.
