Turn lane coming to Lakeside Drive at Holly Springs Parkway
A new right-turn lane will soon be constructed on Lakeside Drive for drivers looking for easier access to Holly Springs Parkway at this intersection. On Tuesday, the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a request from the county's SPLOST/Roadway Department to award a $192,601.63 construction services agreement to Backbone Infrastructure, LLC to construct a right-turn lane on Lakeside Drive to Holly Springs Parkway. Lakeside Drive is home to New Life Church and the Avonlea Springs apartment complex and townhomes, which are under construction. Lakeside Drive is adjacent to Interstate 575’s Exit 14. In 2021, county commissioners approved the Avonlea Springs developer’s request to rezone the 46-acre property to RM-10, multi-family residential. The approval came with a condition that the developer would provide the county with $200,000 to go toward the construction of this right-turn lane. This developer contribution was transferred to the county's Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax account, so both the design and construction are being for paid through SPLOST funding, according to the county. Construction is expected to be completed about 90 days after the notice to proceed is issued to the contractor, according to county documents. Avonlea Springs is scheduled to be annexed into the

Blacks Bluff Road reopens after water main leak, roadway damage
Blacks Bluff Road reopened Thursday after Rome water crews repaired a leak near the prison that damaged part of the roadway and forced a temporary closure. John Boyd said the leak was caused by higher-than-normal water pressure after an altitude valve at the South Rome water tank failed to operate properly following maintenance work. A 12-inch water main from the tank connects with an older 6-inch main at the intersection of Blacks Bluff and Park roads. When the valve failed to open, pumps sent water into the system with no outlet into the tank, increasing pressure and damaging the smaller line. “We worked on it, prepared it properly, and afterward, it did fail to open as it should have,” Boyd said. “When those pumps came on, there was no place for the water to go into the tank, and it created higher-than-normal pressures in that area.” Crews were first notified of the leak around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. Staff worked through Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning to make repairs. Workers returned Thursday to correct a smaller issue with the initial repair. Boyd said the leak damaged the roadway because both the 6-inch and 12-inch mains are located beneath the road
