Mid-week rain, thunder forecast for Michigan. 3-day weather outlook

Michigan will see mid-week rain and possible thunderstorms mainly on Wednesday, June 23, under cooler-than-normal summer air. During the work week, temperatures in Michigan's Lower Peninsula will hold steady in the 70s. Southern cities in the Lower Peninsula are forecast to have the warmest air. Detroit is expected to see a high of 80 degrees on Wednesday, June 24. The Upper Peninsula will see cooler air this week ranging in the 60s to 70s. "Mainly dry and quiet Tuesday (June 23), before showers gradually become likely on Wednesday and Wednesday night (June 24). Temperatures remain somewhat cooler than normal," the Gaylord NWS posted on social media on June 22 . Widespread rain and thunderstorms are most likely to arrive Wednesday, June 25, across the state. Currently, non-severe conditions are expected. Rain and thunderstorms may develop in the western U.P. by Tuesday night, June 22, and linger to Thursday, June 25, the Marquette NWS office said. Residents are urged to stay weather-aware this week as thunderstorms could grow severe or change course. WEATHER STORY: Weather systems are three dimensional and have width and height. Highs and lows can be surface, mid-level and upper-level and even all three. This week, we’ll start with a mid-level trough of lower pressure whose leading edge lifted some Saturday showers. Higher pressure will take over Monday and Tuesday to deliver sunshine. The trough could become a real low (the weather version of Pinocchio) and bring some thunderstorms starting on Tuesday. The cold front from the low will keep us cooler than normal much of the week. Daily rain chances and cooler temperatures refuse to leave

Rain showers tonight with the best rain chances in the South-Central U.P. and near the Michigan/Wisconsin border. Cooler than average temperatures for the middle of June will continue through the weekend and early next week with at times rain showers. Rain will diminish from west to east across the region throughout Thursday morning. Most areas will see light totals between zero and a quarter of an inch, with the highest amounts expected toward the south. High temperatures will remain below normal for this time of year, and while a few spotty showers could develop Thursday afternoon along the state line, most areas will stay dry under a brief period of high pressure. WEATHER STORY: A cold front cut across the region Saturday. That will leave Sunday sunny but cooler than normal by a few degrees. Relative humidity levels will be down again so beware of another stretch of elevated wildfire risks. If not full fledged low pressure systems, at least upper level troughs of lower pressure could lift up a few rain chances for the week ahead. “True” lows are comma shaped and flow in circles. Troughs are elongated areas of lower pressure and can either be “baby” lows not yet fully formed or “senior” lows stretched out at the end of their life spans. Another round of rain for the U.P. tonight

Widespread rain moves across the U.P. tonight with heavy amounts possible for some, followed by a cooler and drier pattern with occasional light showers through Saturday and into next week. Most spots will see up to a half inch of rain, though some areas from Marquette County to the Keweenaw could see over an inch. A few embedded thunderstorms are possible. By Friday morning and afternoon, expect gusty winds between 20 and 30 mph as conditions begin to dry out. DNR: No open debris burning allowed in the U.P. as fire danger rises

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WBUP/WJMN) — Fire danger rises as dry weather persists across the state and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is urging all residents and visitors to use “extreme caution” with their outdoor activities. “We do not expect significant rainfall over the next 10 days, and that greatly increases the risk for wildfires,” said Paul Rogers, DNR fire prevention specialist. “Low moisture levels in conifer needles and dry pine fuels mean fires can start easily and spread quickly under the right conditions.” Due to elevated fire conditions, the DNR will not i ssue permits for burning yard debris. As of Friday, May 29, open debris burning is not permitted anywhere in the Upper Peninsula and no burning permits will be issued. Fire safety reminders The DNR encourages everyone to follow these safety tips while enjoying the outdoors: Keep a hose or water source nearby when burning. Prevent sparks by ensuring trailer chains do not drag on roadways and avoiding parking hot equipment on dry grass. Keep campfires contained in a fire ring or pit and fully extinguish them before leaving. Douse fires with water, stir ashes and douse again. Never leave fires or hot coals unattended. Never shoot

Warm, dry & windy: NWS issues red flag warning for western Upper Peninsula

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WBUP/WJMN) - National Weather Service (NWS) in Marquette issued a red flag warning in the western Upper Peninsula. Through Friday, NWS expects warm, dry and windy conditions across Baraga, Gogebic, Iron, Ontonagon and southern Houghton counties. Wind speeds could exceed 30 mph, with average speeds throughout the day around 10 to 20 mph from the southwest. With relatively low humidity, the weather service says the environment is favorable for rapid fire growth and spread. The red flag critical fire alert for the western Upper Peninsula will remain in place until 9 p.m. EST on Friday, May 15. During a red flag warning, officials advise to not use campfires, grills, smoking materials, fireworks, chainsaws and all-terrain vehicles.
