St. Tammany Parish has started burning a huge pile of debris left by April’s tornadoes, pushing the branches and limbs into an 18-foot-deep pit of fire near Pearl River. The burn will smolder for the next several weeks, turning 15,000 cubic yards of felled trees and branches to ash. The fire will burn “low and slow,” according to parish spokesperson Michael Vinsanau, with the goal of keeping the impact on the environment and nearby residents low.
