Beaufort run to close swing bridge Saturday. How to navigate the traffic and race

S.C. Department of Transportation (SCDOT) wants drivers to be aware of the closure of the Richard V. Woods Memorial Bridge on Business U.S. 21 for nearly three hours. The 2026 Swing Bridge Run 5K takes place Saturday and 5k runners will go back and forth across Beaufort’s historic and iconic swing bridge. Closure of the Woods Bridge, locally called the swing bridge, will start at 7:15 a.m. and last until 9:45 a.m. It will affect all marine navigation including tugs and tugs with tows, according to a press release issued by SCDOT. Cars and trucks will also not be allowed to travel across the metal-riveted truss bridge that connects historic downtown Beaufort to Lady’s Island. If drivers can’t wait out the race, the most convenient way to get across the Beaufort River is to stay on Lady’s Island Drive (U.S. 21 north) driving over the J.E. McTeer Bridge that connects with Ribaut Road into the Town of Port Royal near Beaufort. Beaufort County residents approve $780M penny tax for roads in historic referendum

With 100% of the precincts reporting, Beaufort County residents narrowly approved a historic “penny tax” referendum by a vote of 40,951 to 39,724, a difference of 1,227 votes, preliminary results show. The 1% sales tax referendum will raise $780 million over nine years for 87 road and intersection projects. County officials have said previously that the so-called penny tax, if approved, would fund the largest transportation improvement program in the county’s history. A second ballot question was on the ballot to authorize up to $450 million in bonds to expedite work before sales tax funds begin to accumulate. The bonds would have been repaid using the additional sales tax revenue. It was approved 42,660 votes to 40,276, or 51.44% to 45.56%. During presentations on the proposal, county officials said the funding would be used for improvements to some of the region’s major traffic bottlenecks, such as Highway 170 and Highway 46 in Okatie and William Fording Island Road (U.S. 278) in Bluffton. Additionally, notoriously congested intersections would see upgrades such as turn lanes and upgraded signal lights at locations including Lady’s Island Drive/Ribaut Road in Port Royal, Spanish Wells/William Hilton Parkway on Hilton Head, and Buckwalter Parkway and Bluffton Parkway
