Night of Lights is now in its 40th year, parade Friday
The annual Night of Lights Parade and celebration is Friday night in Columbia Falls. Sponsored by the Lions Club, this year’s theme is “Super Hero Christmas,” so floats should have a super hero theme. People are asked to not have Santa Claus on their floats. The real Santa is always at the end of the parade. This is the 40th anniversary of the event. The parade starts at 6 p.m. and floats should start lining up at 5 p.m. with judging at 5:30 p.m. Registration is $15 or a donation to the Columbia Falls Food Bank. Forms are available around town and online on the Columbia Falls Lions Club Facebook page. You can email forms to kayla.ruby.hartley@gmail.com. Dentist Roger Newman recalled in a 2015 interview hearing the news that the Columbia Falls Aluminum Co. plant would shut down around the time that he had signed a loan to open his own dental office in Columbia Falls. He recalled thinking, “Oh my word. I need to do everything I can to make sure this community stays alive.” Tick Tock Clock Shop owners Williams and Inga Myers, members of the first “Coming Alive in ‘85” committee, originally had the idea to have

New rock cover band Animal House wants to see their audience get up and move
Animal House, whose band members look like they just stepped out of the 1980s, have been rocking Bigfork audiences for the past year with classic cover songs. Despite just getting started, Animal House won Best Band in this year’s Best of Bigfork reader poll. Lead singer and guitarist Micah Miller said they aren’t quite sure who nominated them and only got wind of the competition after people told them who they were voting for. “People started saying ‘We're going to vote for you.’ And we were like ‘Oh, that's cool,’” he laughed. It’s a pleasant surprise for Micah, who recently returned to the area after moving away for a few years following high school. He’s joined in the band by his 17-year-old brother Grant Miller, who plays drums, and his high school friend Wyatt Reichenbach, who plays bass. They performed regularly at bars in Bigfork this past summer, occasionally joined by a third Miller sibling, their sister McCall. Covering songs from ZZ Top, American Grand Funk Railroad, AC/DC and other bands of the era — their goal is to get people up and dancing at their shows. “You see shows where people are just kind of sitting there, completely dead,

United Methodist Church’s annual Christmas cantata is music to the ears
Choir members at the Bigfork Community United Methodist Church will perform the “What Sweeter Music” Christmas cantata on Dec. 14. The group is an expansion of the regular church choir and has been putting on cantata’s during Easter and Christmas over the last few years, according to Church Music Director Jordan Neiman, who also teaches piano and oral perception at Flathead Valley Community College. He said their composition this year is from 2016 and provides a nice mix of contemporary music and traditional songs. “It mixes in some Latin, so it has a kind of traditional feel to it. ‘We Three Kings’ is in there ... ‘O Come Emmanuel’ we sing in Latin. And then there's some new compositions, one of my favorites is ‘What Sweeter Music,’” Neiman said. The choir project started about three years ago, and every time they meet to prepare for their next cantata, the group grows, Neiman said. They hover between 20 and 25 members, and start practicing about 10 weeks before a performance. Pastor Wendy Ochs said that even though she’s not a “spectacular singer,” she can carry a tune and has fun alongside other community members. “We are happy that we've got several

Outlaws journey to the last mountain in Whitefish snowboarder’s debut film
It’s the year 2340. Public lands have long been auctioned off and natural resources over-extracted. “Veil Corps” rose, established a monopoly, and then abandoned the resorts for a digitized winter sports experience. A guitar riff emerges and slowly ebbs into a yell. “From beyond earth, the void has given birth.” It was none other than The Gray Goo’s Matt Carper, Max Gargasz and Zach Ronish, a Flathead Valley psychedelic funk-rock-punk band persevering from the year 2025. “Machine of great girth. Steel and flesh converged ... You walk into the mist, reality is ripped,” the song continues. The drums and bass set the scene for a dystopian society, wherein a small band of outlaws is determined to rise from the mist. They dream of finding the last mountain remaining, somewhere in the depths of Northwest Montana, in a place that once harbored glaciers. To reach the snow line, the outlaws need to re-emerge themselves in the elements, traveling on foot and boat, with snowboards and supplies strapped to their pack mule companions. THE JOURNEY is captured in Whitefish snowboarder Jason Robinson’s debut film, “Veil: In Search of the Last Mountain,” which premiered Nov. 21 to a standing-room only crowd at the

Snow creates winter wonderland for Polson parade
As plump snowflakes fell, a crowd assembled on Main Street in Polson Friday night in hopes that St. Nicholas soon would arrive. And sure enough, he did – along with the Grinch, floats and firetrucks. But before the Polson Chamber’s Parade of Lights got underway, kids took over the street in front of the VFW for a rambunctious snowball fight – a good thing too, since snow soon turned to rain and the three inches of white fluff were mostly gone by morning. This year’s parade boasted 22 entries, including illuminated floats created by businesses, banks, hospitals, youth groups and local churches. According to Polson Chamber administrator Lori Abramson, participation was down from 27 entries in 2024 – a drop that could have been weather related since some businesses had to tend to their customers. Murdoch’s captured the Best of Parade award with a float emblazoned with “Merry Christmas, From Our Herd to Yours.” Eagle Bank won the “Most Creative” title and Adam Probst’s State Farm float was deemed “Most Humorous.” Immaculate Conception Catholic Church was judged to have the Best Light Display. The Gingerbread Man meandered down Main Street pulling a wagon filled with goodies, which were dispersed by
