Explore Whitefish helps local restaurants raise over $420,000 to support rental assistance
Whitefish is, once again, showing the power of community. Local restaurants, through the 1% Community Support Fund, are stepping up to make a real difference for the people who call Whitefish home. In partnership with Housing Whitefish, this effort has already impacted more than 80 individuals working at over 50 local businesses—helping to ensure that those who serve our community every day can continue to live and thrive here. The program, made possible by the participation of Explore Whitefish restaurant members, builds on a long tradition of giving back. For years, Explore Whitefish has supported nonprofits through its community grant program. The shift to directly support Housing Whitefish in a much larger way has had an immediate and visible impact, with more than $420,000 being raised to date. “Whitefish has always been about people taking care of each other,” said Mariah Joos, owner of Ace Hardware and board chair of Explore Whitefish. “Our local restaurants and cafes are not only feeding us—they’re investing in our neighbors and in the future of our town.” Today, more than 27 restaurants, coffee shops, and cafes are participating in the fund, with more expected to join. While fewer than a handful of restaurants have

Meet the Chef: Blackstar’s Katie Haynes
Let’s get this out of the way right now. If you like what you see in this story, it’s probably too late to order it. And if you’re reading this a few months from now, perhaps sometime after Memorial Day, forget it. Blackstar’s “Tuesday Night Burger Special” has already gone back into seasonal hibernation, waiting for the slow, relaxing days of fall to return. That’s because, as head chef Katie Haynes puts it, “this was not a July idea.”

'Nutcracker' comes to Bigfork stage Thanksgiving weekend
The Northwest Ballet Company presents its 37th production of "Nutcracker" over Thanksgiving weekend at the Bigfork Center for the Performing Arts. The company has been preparing since mid-September for the magical occasion and director Marisa Roth is pleased with how each dancer pours themselves into their parts. From the squeaky little mice, to the radiant Sugar Plum Fairy, they've been working hard yet also having fun in their weekly rehearsals. "The growth from September to November always astounds me," said Roth. "I'm so grateful for the supportive community who faithfully comes to Christmas-decked-out-Bigfork for our performances each season. We aim to always have something different and special for them as they do." With dancers from throughout the Flathead Valley and as far away as Eureka, as well as guests from around the community, the cast of roughly 50 is ecstatic for show weekend in the theater. Senior at Glacier High School and Northwest Ballet Company Principal dancing the role of the Sugar Plum Fairy, Marygrace Knuffke reflects, "These moments leading up to the show are bittersweet, but I know once the shows come, I'll be able to live it up. It's crazy to think that I'm one of the big

Bigfork Playhouse Children’s Theatre celebrates 25th anniversary
Whether it’s reminiscing about bloopers during dress rehearsals, cast parties at the Bigfork Inn or the moment they finally got that choreography right — Bigfork Playhouse Children’s Theatre alumni agree on one thing: it was spectacular fun. The Bigfork Playhouse Children’s Theatre has created invaluable experiences for aspiring young performers for over 25 years. The organization invited everyone to celebrate last weekend with “Puttin’ on the Glitz,” a variety show featuring alumni performing alongside currents members. After attendees watched numbers from classic musicals and modern favorites, they flooded the lobby to catch up with former castmates and theater folks. Typed up testimonies from alumni lined the walls, surrounding everyone with 25 years of memories. Founder Brach Thomson, who is the program’s creative director and producer, said it was amazing to see the comments about how the theater made an impact on people’s lives. “Very touching, very neat to see that. You know, you never realize. One of my favorite lines in the show is a line from ‘Wicked’ that says, ‘I don't know if I've touched these kids for the better, but I know I've changed them for good,’” Thomson said. Comments submitted by alumni for their 25th anniversary echo
