Portland ‘Weather Machine’ predicts weather downtown for more than 35 years
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A fanfare of music has been alerting Pioneer Courthouse Square visits of the day’s weather forecast for more than 35 years. Unsuspecting spectators look in awe and confusion as music echoes through Pioneer Courthouse Square every day at noon. A spray of water and three sculpted characters emerge from the reflective global that sits in the northwest corner of the park. Flashing lights along the sculptures coincides with the nearly two-minute long fanfare of music, water and moving sculpture display.
Readers respond: Costs of PSU protest
It is sad to see the chairs, tables and supplies thrown into the stairwells inside Portland State University by protesters who claim to be students, (“Negotiations fail in Portland State library standoff’s 3rd day; campus remains closed,” May 1). I remember when PSU first came into existence and how small the classrooms were, lacking enough desks to accommodate the students. Now the walls are covered with graffiti, and there is trash and broken glass on the floors.
Grand jury declines to indict police officers in 2023 deadly shooting outside Mall 205 in SE Portland
A Multnomah County grand jury declined to indict three Portland police officers who shot and killed man while trying to arrest him late last year. Police shot Tyrone Lee Johnson II, 33, outside Mall 205 on Dec. 27, 2023. The officers involved in the shooting were John Bartlett, Adi Ramic and Brian Wheeler.

Persistent Rain to Soak Portland All Week, NWS Advises No Respite Until Midweek
Portland residents might have to keep their umbrellas out all week as the wet weather shows no signs of letting up. The National Weather Service in Portland, Oregon, has issued a detailed forecast, warning of persistent rain set to saturate the city for days. According to the NWS update, locals looking forward to a respite from the downpours will have to wait a little longer, with rainfall predicted to continue through the weekend and into the early part of next week.
