CORDELE -- Southwest Georgia Railroad Excursion Authority Chairman Lee Kinnamon and Second District Georgia Department of Transportation Board Member Cathy Williams ceremoniously drove a spike as they announced work will begin soon on an additional track at the SAM Shortline.

The authority has been awarded $1,625,425 from GDOT to construct a storage/maintenance track in Georgia Veterans State Park near Cordele. Williams said the grant was one of only six awarded by the department this year. The Georgia Freight Railroad Program, which received funds through the locomotive fuel tax, is designed to enhance the state’s investment in freight rail projects for public benefit.
