Tyler Miller and Jabraylon Brown have been competing in the long jump throughout the season, at practice and in meets.
They have flip-flopped first and second places during the postseason.
Saturday morning on the big stage of the Class 1A UIL Track & Field Championships, it was Miller who edged Brown by two inches on his final jump to win the state title. Brown finished second.
Miller soared 21 feet, 10.75 inches on his final jump to overtake Brown, who won a silver medal with an effort of 21 feet, 8.75 inches.
It was a reversal of the regional meet, when Brown overtook Miller on his final jump to win the event.
Brown took the early lead at the state meet and notched his medal-winning effort on his third of six jumps. He was in line for the gold medal until Miller's final leap.
Miller topped 21 feet just once in his first five jumps and was sitting in third place at 21-2, which he did on his fourth jump, when he stepped up to the runway for his final effort.
The win was a fitting way for Miller to end his high school career. Brown, a junior, will have one more chance to return to the state meet and pursue a state championship.
Brown said he felt confident in his jumps Saturday.
"I felt like I was jumping good. I got a (personal record)," he said.
He said during the meet it felt like he and Miller were competing against each other. They finished out in front of the rest of the field. Third-place finisher Brent Robinson of Whitharral had a top effort of 21-2.50, more than six inches behind Brown.
The 1-2 finish by the Yellowjackets put them in the early leads in team standings with 18 points.
Brown vowed to return to the state meet next year.
"I'm already looking forward to putting in the extra work. I want to break the record next year," he said.
Miller was not available for comment shortly after the event Saturday morning.
Coolidge's Devonta Johnson was scheduled to compete in the triple jump Saturday afternoon.
