Esox, which operated for nearly 50 years at 194 Main Street, posted an image of a headstone engraved with “ESOX” and “RIP” on social media on Sunday; the dates of life read October 2, 1978, to August 15, 2026. Mirabelles replaces both Kitchen Table eateries after abrupt closures | Exclusive
SOUTH BURLINGTON — The Kitchen Table restaurant in Richmond and its café-market counterpart in South Burlington have closed. Now, the renowned Mirabelles Bakery will set up new, expanded offerings in both spots. Mirabelles owner Jacob Kent said the new operation in Richmond is likely to be called Belle’s on the River. It will run inside the space near the Winooski River where The Kitchen Table restaurant served food before abruptly closing this month. In South Burlington, where the Kitchen Table Market & Café had shared space with Chicken Charlie’s, Mirabelles will open a market of its own. It will be named something along the lines of Mirabelles Market, Kent said, and sit about two miles down the road from the main Mirabelles Bakery, which Kent said will remain open. “We are very tucked away” in the bakery space off Williston Road, Kent said, but the business sees steady foot traffic. “People run in here all day, year round.” He expects the two new spaces to be ready to welcome customers by Oct. 1. The moves mark a significant expansion for Mirabelles just two years after Kent bought the bakery from Alison Lane and Andrew Silva, who founded it in Burlington

Blue Paddle Bistro closes after 21 years in the Lake Champlain islands
A popular, long-running restaurant has announced its permanent closure in the heart of the Lake Champlain islands' busy summer season. The Blue Paddle Bistro has served diners visiting South Hero for more than two decades. Mandy Hotchkiss, who ran the restaurant with chef Phoebe Bright, posted what she termed a “Brief Heartfelt Message to All of You” on the restaurant’s Facebook page Aug. 13. “After 21-plus years, we experienced a perfect storm of circumstances that caused us to come to the difficult decision to end our beloved business,” Hotchkiss wrote. She did not elaborate on the causes but followed up Aug. 14 with some “last photos of our wonderful friends from this past weekend.” From the outside, the announcement seemed sudden. Earlier this month, the restaurant was promoting a musician set to perform there Aug. 29 and encouraging people to make reservations “ASAP.” The Blue Paddle Bistro was known for its dog-friendly nature and “paddle pups” who populated the patio in nicer weather. Bright’s menu featured American fare and drew visitors in summer and for special occasions such as Valentine’s Day, Easter and Mother’s Day. Hotchkiss told the Burlington Free Press in 2023 that Memorial Day through October is typically
