Upper Pass Beer evolves from former sheep farm to Burlington taproom
Upper Pass Beer began in 2015 in a location apropos its name: a 12-acre former sheep farm set on the side of a mountain off a single-lane dirt road in Tunbridge. Bucolic, yes. Accessible, no. The brewery was upper, to be sure, but potential customers were almost certain not to pass by. Upper Pass did open a taproom three years later in the quiet but not remote village of South Royalton. Now the brewery has done something of a 180, moving operations from rural Vermont to Burlington, the largest city in the state, where it can more easily sell directly to the public. Upper Pass opened May 6 in the Ethan Allen Shopping Center space that housed Simple Roots Brewing, which shut down at the end of last year . Upper Pass has picked up the taproom business pretty much where its predecessor left off, augmenting Simple Roots’ system with some of its own equipment and planning to expand into an adjoining erstwhile barbershop to create a 10-barrel brewhouse this summer. “This just became such a good fit for us,” said Chris Perry, who founded Upper Pass with Ivan Tomek. Vermont's 'hazy IPA craziness’ movement Upper Pass arrived on the

Sub shop located in S. Burlington takes top spot for fast food chains
The king of fast food has officially been dethroned. For the first time in more than a decade, Chick-fil-A is no longer the top-rated quick-service restaurant, according to the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI), which rates eateries based on thousands of customer surveys reflecting on recent experiences with major chains. After an 11-year run, results from 16,464 respondents knocked the chicken chain from its coveted spot in favor of sandwich shop Jersey Mike's, which was commended for its freshness, food variety and value. Securing an ACSI score of 84 out of 100, Jersey Mike's, which has a location at 225 Dorset St. in South Burlington, edged Chick-fil-A out by one point after adding 238 net new locations in 2025 and clearing $4.2 billion in sales. "The U.S. restaurant industry faced difficulties in 2025, with total sales struggling to keep pace with inflation," said the report published Tuesday, June 16. "In a market defined by trade-offs, customers are placing greater emphasis on consistency, reliability, and perceived value as opposed to just price. Brands that deliver a consistently enjoyable experience are gaining ground." Wondering where your favorites ranked in 2026? Read more below. More news: Goal! Where to score food, drink deals
