What to know about the Silfab Solar manufacturing plant controversy in York County

The Silfab Solar plant in Fort Mill has been one of the most contested industrial projects in South Carolina for three years, drawing protests, lawsuits, chemical spill investigations and competing court filings between the company and York County itself. A protest set for Monday afternoon in York is the latest development in the controversy, with members of the group Move Silfab arguing ahead of a York County Council meeting that the company shouldn’t be allowed to use industrial chemicals at its site. Here’s what readers need to know about how the dispute reached this point — and where it stands now. What is Silfab Solar, and why is it in Fort Mill? Silfab is a Canadian company that manufactures and assembles solar panels. In 2023, York County Council narrowly approved — by a 4-3 vote — a tax incentive agreement to bring the company to 7149 Logistics Lane in Fort Mill. The deal was built around a projected $150 million investment and 800 new jobs. The site sits in an area zoned light industrial. It is also next to Fort Mill School District property, where Flint Hill Elementary opened last year and Flint Hill Middle opened this school year. Why

Silfab and York County file suits wanting the same thing: an answer from a judge

Silfab Solar and York County filed civil lawsuits late Friday afternoon seeking a judge to issue a ruling about the zoning controversy over the Fort Mill plant that has been going on for years, according to court records and a statement from the company. Silfab and the county filed the suits against each other, court records show, but they both are asking a court to issue what is called a “declaratory judgment” concerning whether a two-year-old York County Zoning Board of Appeals decision impacts Silfab’s right to manufacture at 7149 Logistics Lane. Even with the filings by both Silfab and York County asking a judge to issue a ruling, no hearing date on the lawsuits has been set as of Friday afternoon. It remains unclear when that will happen. The zoning appeals board ruled against allowing solar panel manufacturing in areas zoned light industrial, like the Silfab site. In July, a judge upheld that ruling and it is on appeal. But Silfab has said for years publicly and in court, and said again Friday in its lawsuit, that the zoning appeals board ruling applies only to future projects and is not applicable to Silfab because the company already had county

Lake Norman's first African-Caribbean grocery store opens. Meet the owner.

After seven years of running the business online, Mooresville resident Tina Miessein has opened Lake Norman’s first African and Caribbean grocery store . Miessein realized that people in search of fresh African and Caribbean foods, spices and other goods had to drive to Charlotte. Why not a store here?, she thought. On Sept. 28, she opened Amoikon Store on Brawley Avenue across from the gigantic Merino Mill retail-commercial complex on South Main Street. The store sells fresh produce, meats, seafood, spices, frozen foods and other African and Caribbean goods, including health and beauty products, traditional clothing ( Ankara fabric) and handcrafted art and cultural decor. Miessein is from Côte d’Ivoire in West Africa. She decided to move closer to her sister Christelle Binda, who was already here. Store name has special meaning Miessein named the store after her 13-year-old son Richard Kouacou’s middle name, she told CharlotteFive at Amoikon Store on Thursday. The store is about 600 square feet, with shelves full of foods and other items. Besides offerings from many African countries, she sells foods from Great Britain, Italy, Thailand and elsewhere. A selection of fresh frozen fish includes mackerel from Spain, and tilapia and pompano from the U.S.
