However, despite being upset, 21-16, by Seagoville at Franklin Field, the Panthers remain in solid position for a second straight postseason berth. In fact, they might be better off, at least mentally.

Frisco scores road upset, hands Celina 1st loss
CELINA – The Frisco football team weathered the strong winds at Bobcat Field on Friday and got the better of previously unbeaten Celina 33-20 in a District 4-5A Division II contest. The Raccoons (5-2, 4-1) took a 6-0 lead on Brenden Bounds a 36-yard touchdown pass to Kason Cowan with 6:33 left in the first quarter. Celina forced a punt deep in Frisco’s territory late in the opening frame and took advantage of a short field, taking a 7-6 lead when senior Evan Koehne scored on a one-yard run to cap a 40-yard drive. “The wind was a factor, and you could see that on the missed PAT after their first score,” said Celina head coach Marc Bindel. “It was certainly going to change the game on special teams.” But not on the next play. Frisco senior Lowery Asel returned the ensuing kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown – his third special teams score of the season – to put the Raccoons back on top 12-7 with just under a minute left in the first quarter. “We wanted to create some big plays,” said Jeff Harbert, Frisco head coach. “And that was a big one.” With the wind playing a

5A Football Roundup: Reedy falls short against Melissa; Heritage, Lone Star QBs shine
The Reedy football team gave powerhouse Melissa all it could handle on Friday, but the strength of the Cardinals’ ground game spoiled an upset bid inside the game’s final minute. Melissa broke a 35-35 tie with 40 seconds remaining following a 9-yard touchdown run by Jeremiah Tabor to deal the Lions a 41-35 loss from Kuykendall Stadium. Reedy navigated double-digit deficits of 14-3 and 28-17 throughout the ballgame, overcoming the latter with a 17-play drive to open the third quarter – capped by a 9-yard touchdown run by senior Nathan Tonwe – followed by a 34-yard field goal from senior Brayden Prim to pull within a point, 28-27, with 10:14 left in the fourth quarter. After Melissa found the end zone two minutes later, Reedy answered with an 8-yard touchdown from senior Lincoln Harn to senior Ben Francis, followed by a two-point conversion between that same duo, to knot the count at 35-35 with 4:23 remaining. But Melissa was able to ground Reedy with a 75-yard drive that consumed nearly four minutes, with Tabor scoring the game-winning points. In defeat, Harn threw for 276 yards, three touchdowns and a pick with all three scores going the way of Francis as

Trick play sparks Plano East’s surge past Plano
MURPHY – Still searching for its first points of the night late into Friday’s second quarter, the Plano East football team was looking for something to spark its offense coming out of the two-minute timeout. That came in the form of a well-timed flea flicker, with senior Josh Gordon finding senior Aidan Forthman all alone for a 58-yard touchdown to breathe life into home half of Kimbrough Stadium and pull the Panthers within three points of rival Plano, 10-7. “It was a good call by our offensive coordinator (Kevin Mikeska),” said Tony Benedetto, East head coach. “At first, I was like, ‘Are you sure?’ We had to do something there. We came out pretty flat and hadn’t executed. I think our kids played so emotional that we weren’t executing, so we just had to put execution over emotion and I think we started playing better once we did that.” That panned out for the duration of Friday’s rivalry bout, as the Panthers strung together 24 straight points to overtake the Wildcats for a 31-17 victory and improve to 3-1 in District 7-6A play. “It just means you’re that much closer to the playoffs,” Benedetto said. “There’s two kinds of teams
