(WKBN)- With Memorial Day just ahead, many use the holiday as a good time for planting, but the Ohio State University Extension Office says there are some things to consider.

Soil temperature is more important than air temperature when planting seeds. Cool-season vegetables require soil temperatures above 55 degrees. Warm-season vegetables require soil temperatures above 75 degrees, according to the Ohio State University gardening calendar.

Cool-season vegetables can stand light frost and may continue growing until a hard freeze. They are usually vegetables in which the plant is eaten. Warm-season vegetables are those in which the fruit is eaten such as tomatoes and peppers.

There are plants that can be planted all summer long for a fall harvest but compare with the first frost date to make sure that there are enough growing days remaining.

For seeds that are started indoors, those plants can go in the ground according to the type of vegetable. For instance, after March 15, onions, radishes, spinach and turnips can be planted.

After May 15, corn, beets, cabbage, carrots, cucumbers and pumpkins can be planted, among other vegetables. More vegetables and planting times can be found on the OSU planting calendar.

Vegetables to be transplanted in the spring should be started indoors approximately four weeks prior to the planting date on the calendar.

You can find more plants and planting dates on the OSU calendar and which zones in Ohio to consider.
