COLUMBUS, Ind. — Two Columbus residents were arrested after drugs, as well as a weapon, were reportedly found during a recent traffic stop.
According to a news release from the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office, 25-year-old Cheyanne George and 36-year-old David Swift were arrested after methamphetamine, as well as a Glock 43 handgun, were found by deputies during a traffic stop.
At around 11:25 p.m. on Wednesday, a deputy with the sheriff’s office pulled over a green Pontiac passenger car on U.S. 31 for an equipment violation. The office said that one of the people inside the vehicle, later identified as George, was known to the deputy as having an active warrant for her arrest. A K9 reportedly alerted to the presence of drugs in the vehicle.
During the traffic stop, the deputy reportedly saw another occupant of the vehicle, later identified as Swift, reach under the front passenger seat. As deputies attempted to detain Swift, the release said Swift “resisted efforts to detain him with quick jerking motions” which caused two plastic baggies to fall to the ground.
After the baggies fell to the ground, the release said that Swift reportedly stepped on the baggies, which reportedly contained a white crystal-like substance that later tested positive for methamphetamine. Swift had to be restrained by three law enforcement officers.
Officials said that George reportedly had a smoking device with burnt residue in one of her pants pockets. A Glock 43 handgun was reportedly found underneath the front passenger seat by deputies.
Swift and George were both transported to the Bartholomew County Jail. Swift has been charged with possession of methamphetamine, unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, resisting law enforcement and disorderly conduct.
The release said that George was charged with obstruction of justice, possession of marijuana, a substance that was reportedly found later in her undergarments, possession of paraphernalia and her outstanding warrant.
