California Wind Damage: SCE Has Already Paid $1.6 Billion Over the Eaton Fire – Now It’s Cutting Your Power to Avoid the Next One

Santa Ana winds hit the Los Angeles area this week with gusts approaching 70 miles per hour. Southern California Edison responded the way it has been responding ever since the January 2025 fires: it cut the power. More than 70,000 customers across Los Angeles and Ventura counties lost electricity in a preemptive Public Safety Power Shutoff — what SCE calls a PSPS — while another 230,000 were placed under consideration for shutoffs. L.A. County Supervisor Kathryn Barger issued a blunt warning to residents: “Strong winds can cause fires to spread quickly, leaving little time to react.”
