April falls well below average in terms of snowfall

(SOUTHERN COLORADO) — April showers bring May flowers; we’ve all heard the saying once or twice. However, this April seemed to lack in precipitation, specifically when it came to snowfall.

In Colorado Springs, April featured 11 days of precipitation out of 30 for the month. A few days had snowfall and a few had just some light precipitation. By the end of April, a total of 1.52 inches of precipitation had fallen for the Springs.

For Pueblo, the month of April featured only six days of measurable precipitation. There was a stretch of 17 days at the beginning of the month that featured no precipitation at all. Snow was particularly hard to come by.

Colorado Springs saw a maximum temperature of 78 degrees and the lowest high temperature of 37 degrees. Precipitation was about average for the month, but snowfall was almost five inches behind normal. Of course, these statistics are measured from just one place, so others around the city with varying elevations likely have different numbers to report.

Pueblo maxed out at 86 degrees for April with just over 1 inch of precipitation for the month. A trace of snow was reported on April 20th and April 27th—just two days total. Normal snowfall for the area is usually up over 3 inches, so Pueblo was certainly a bit behind too.

As far as where we go from here, the Climate Prediction Center is keeping an eye on trends for the month of May. For right now, Southern Colorado may lean just a bit towards below-average precipitation and above-average temperatures. In general, though, it appears that our viewing area is on track to have a roughly normal month in terms of precipitation and temperature.
