(EL PASO COUNTY, Colo.) — El Paso County currently ranks number one for impaired driving arrests in the state, and Diversus Health in Colorado Springs is here to help.

Colorado State Patrol (CSP) revealed where troopers gave the most citations for impaired driving last year. In 2023, CSP issued 4,120 citations for impaired driving, according to a press release. While every county had a share of those incidents, CSP said “certain areas of our state have increased amounts.”

These counties had the most impaired driving citations in 2023:

  1. El Paso County
  2. Adams County
  3. Jefferson County
  4. Weld County
  5. Larimer County

Earlier this year, CSP released similar data regarding which counties had the most speeding citations last year and which counties had the most speeding citations in school and construction zones . El Paso County topped each of those lists as well.

“Being arrested for impairment can have long-term consequences that shouldn’t be underestimated,” said Chief of CSP Col. Matthew C. Packard. “It impacts your job, family situation, financial situation and more.”

Packard said he hopes that Coloradans can become known as “people who do the right thing by enjoying themselves responsibly.”

Diversus Health offers Driving Under the Influence (DUI) programs for people who are court-ordered to attend treatment after a DUI conviction.

“There are people that are frustrated and upset, people that are mad at themselves that it happened or that they didn’t make a different choice,” explained Sarah Walgenbach, Director of substance use disorder programming at Diversus Health. “You know, Uber is $30 to get you home, a DUI is $10,000 by the end of it for your first one or so.”

Treatment at Diversus Health is provided based on a comprehensive initial assessment to develop a personal treatment plan, which may include individual or group support services, random urinalysis testing, and monthly updates to probation officers. The group sessions for both the education and therapy components take place in the evenings, and transportation is offered within a certain radius.

“We’ve had some clients that come in on Monday and start group Monday night, like they can literally start that same night or that same week, so it’s very easy,” Walgenbach said. “You can also call if you can’t make it in and they can do a telehealth appointment for you so you can do it right from your own home.”
