Bicyclist in hospital after crash in Colonial Heights

COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. (WRIC) — A bicyclist is in the hospital with serious injuries after police say he was struck by the driver of an SUV in Colonial Heights late Tuesday night.

According to the Colonial Heights Police Department, officers responded to the 200 block of East Ellerslie Avenue at around 11:47 p.m. for a report of a crash involving an electric bicycle and an SUV.

It was determined that the driver of the SUV made a left turn off of East Ellerslie Avenue onto a private driveway while the bicyclist was traveling west on Ellerslie Avenue and the driver struck the bicyclist.

The bicyclist was taken to Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center in Richmond with serious injuries. Colonial Heights Police investigators are working with the Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney to determine if charges are warranted.
