CT seniors won’t see full effect of Social Security benefit increase

Social Security recipients in Connecticut and nationwide are getting a cost-of-living increase . Benefits are set to increase by $75 per month or $900 per year starting in January 2027. While it is expected to alleviate some pressure from rising costs, polls show most Social Security recipients wanted a 5% to 8% increase to keep up with the cost of inflation. John Erlingheuser, senior advocacy and outreach director for AARP Connecticut, said the increase will not be so impactful. "Medicare premiums are expected to go up in January and a lot of this increase will get eaten up by the increase in the cost of Medicare, which won’t leave so much for medicine, gas, electric, gasoline, water, and groceries," Erlingheuser pointed out. "People are going to be in a position regardless, of making some hard choices." The announcement came just before new data showed inflation rose in September, and workers' paychecks continue to dwindle amid inflation. Since the pandemic, Erlingheuser noted people have been taking drastic measures to cut costs, from cutting back on necessary medications, leaving thermostats at unhealthy levels and reducing how much food they buy. Beyond the inflationary pressure, it could ultimately affect Social Security’s solvency. Reports
