Will loud, pervasive 13-year or 17-year cicadas emerge from the earth this year in Kansas?
A loud, pervasive type of cicada that emerges only once every 17 years will appear this year in far western Missouri, but apparently not in Kansas. Cicadas from what is known as "Brood XIII" are projected to come up from the ground in an area extending as far east as Benton County, Missouri — which is adjacent to Crawford County in southeast Kansas — says a 2024 cicada map compiled using data from various federal agencies and published May 7 by USA Today.

In the small town of Palmyra, Missouri, northwest of Hannibal (the hometown of Mark Twain), a historical property has taken on new life as Cole’s Hearth Room. Now an elevated American restaurant, the Hearth Room was a farmstead whose original barns and silo were built in 1846. During the Civil War, gurneys filled the halls of the main building so the home could function as a hospital. When the farm’s owners lost the home during the Great Depression, the adjacent Greenwood Cemetery developed it into a caretaker’s house. In 2006, Chef Coltin Cole and his wife, Deidra, purchased and began renovating the property.

SEDALIA, Mo. (KMIZ) A man was charged with assault and other felonies on Monday after allegedly firing shots at deputies from a residence on Sadie Lane in Sedalia on Sunday. Jonathan Parkhurst was charged with first-degree assault, armed criminal action and two counts of unlawful use of a weapon. IL health officials warn of West Nile Virus
(KBSI) – West Nile Virus could be a major issue this summer, according to the Illinois Department of Health. The first two batches of mosquitoes to test positive in 2024 for West Nile virus in Illinois were in in Hoffman Estates in Cook County and one in Morgan County, according to the Illinois Department of Health.
Missouri State Fair concert and event tickets now on sale
Tickets to all Missouri State Fair concerts and events are now on sale to the public, while supplies last. This includes all concerts and events in the State Fair Grandstand, the Governor’s Ham Breakfast, and $12 advance adult gate admission. These tickets will be available through Etix.com and by phone at 1-800-514-ETIX or 1-800-514-3849. Starting at noon on Monday, July 1, tickets will be available for purchase at the Missouri State Fair Box Office, located on the Fairgrounds in Sedalia.
