Rain to take welcome weekend break in Sacramento. Here's how long it could last
After two days of on-and-off showers that Central California has not seen months, the rain is coming to a close as of Friday morning. Precipitation was intense across the state. As of late Thursday morning, radar-estimated rainfall totaled more than half an inch in parts of the San Joaquin Valley and a quarter inch in the Sacramento Valley. By Friday morning, those totals will be slightly higher. The official Sacramento International Airport total so far is 0.34 inches, which is notably higher than the downtown Sacramento estimate, and would make it the wettest two-day stretch for Sacramento since May 4-5. Meanwhile, Fresno officially recorded at 0.2 inches at the airport, the wettest two-day stretch since April 25-26. The biggest rain totals came in Southern California and on the Central Coast. Thanks to a line of intense thunderstorms late Wednesday and into Thursday morning, Santa Barbara received more than two inches, with nearby San Luis Obispo clocking in about an inch and a half — its wettest days since Feb. 16-17. It’s a reminder that the wet season is at our doorstep, and it won’t be long before its taking a giant step into our living room. El Niño is expected

Showers will exit Northern California’s mountains Friday morning, followed by a stretch of sunny, dry and seasonable weather across Chico and Redding. Patchy fog and widespread haze may reduce visibility early Friday before skies gradually clear. Temperatures will reach the lower 70s as north to northwest winds increase to between 9 and 14 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph.

The wet season has arrived in NorCal. What to expect from skies over the next few days
As we swing into the cooler months of the year, get used to more days like Wednesday and Thursday, with scattered showers across California and cloudy skies. On Wednesday, an area of cooler low pressure — an extratropical cyclone — is spinning out off the coast of the Golden State. As it churns, it brings with it scattered rain showers moving out of the south Wednesday through Thursday across nearly the entire state. For Sacramento and Fresno, it will be the first good rain — not a trace amount — since late spring. Because of how the cyclone is maturing off the coast, many of these showers will stack up and “train” across thin bands, leaving some cities and towns with little rain and others with substantial amounts. Earlier Wednesday, a string of showers and thunderstorms dropped upwards of half an inch of rain between Clovis and Sanger while Fresno remained mostly dry. Into Wednesday afternoon, Fresno and the San Joaquin Valley were seeing lighter, more widespread showers take hold for several hours at a time. Another half in to inch of rain are expected across the southern San Joaquin Valley, and especially the Sierra foothills, through Thursday. Slightly lower
