Mt. Shasta Ski Park targets December opening as El Niño winter nears
The strong El Niño being forecast for far Northern California could bring a warmer and wetter season than usual this winter, just as Mt. Shasta Ski Park prepares to open around the holidays for what employees hope will be a busy time. "Everyone's talking about this super El Niño, and we're hopeful it delivers a big winter," ski park spokeswoman Grace Hornbeak said in a news release. "But we didn't want to count on it. Our crew put in a summer of hard work so we can open on less snow and keep runs open longer, whatever this winter brings." Crews cleared brush and cut tree stumps across its runs. The work means the runs will need less snow to open safely, giving skiers potentially more days on the slopes if early-season snow is light, Hornbeak said. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's winter outlook, released on Oct. 15, shows more precipitation, but whether that means more snowfall and a fluffy, white blanket for skiers, is not yet known. But Hornbeak said the park is optimistic that the El Niño conditions will bring plenty of snow to the 2026-27 ski season. The ski park is targeting a mid-December opening. Lack

High temps in Fresno to fall 20 degrees this week. What to expect in Central Valley and state
Despite chilly weekend mornings, the high temperature in Fresno is expected to touch 90 Saturday and then fall to 70 by Wednesday. The topsy-turvy weather and winds can be a calling card of mid-October. After a brief taste of cooler October temperatures, the Central Valley is in for one more warm stretch this weekend before a stronger cooldown moves into Northern California next week. Across the Central Valley from Sacramento to Fresno, skies will remain mostly clear this weekend as winds continue to flow out of the northeast offshore. It’s a great weekend to visit the ocean. Even the mountains, despite winds Friday gusting above 30 mph, won’t be half bad. Saturday especially looks nice for late-season hiking as winds begin to slow across the Sierra and with highs in the 60s and 70s. Sunday’s temperatures will taper ahead of the real cooldown next week. Highs will dip a few degrees into the low to mid-80s between Sacramento, Modesto and Fresno, with some gusty afternoon winds out of the south at 20 mph. This change in direction will mark the end of warm temps along the coast, so make those plans for Saturday if you can. Blast of cooler fall
