St. Peter election judges report high turnout

While there's no presidential election on the ballot this year, election judges across St. Peter's two precincts reported that turnout this year resembled a general election more than a standard midterm. "This is better than the general election last time," said Warren Michels, head judge of the Ward I precinct at the St. Peter Community Center. Michels, who has served as an election judge since 2010, reported that around 1,200 votes had been cast at the precinct around 5 p.m. Election judge Gigi Dobosenski noted that the precinct was seeing plenty of young voters throughout the day as students from Gustavus Adolphus College had arrived to cast their ballots. "This precicnt has a lot college students voting for the first time," said Dobosenski. Over at the St. Peter Armory in Ward II, it was a similar story. Election judges confirmed that over 1,400 ballots had been cast at around 5:30 p.m. "We've had very good turnout. There's more people now than there has been. It's crazy, it's like a presidential election," said Amy Jamm, Head Election Judge. Ward II Precinct Judge Colleen Jacks said she and election officials had been busy all day to keep up with the steady stream

Incumbent State Rep. Kristi Pursell wins 3rd term

Incumbent State Rep. Kristi Pursell, DFL-Northfield, beat Republican challenger Steve Cherney with 56.02% of the vote and will represent state House District 58A for a third term. Cherney, who lost with 9,809 votes, or 43.88%, said Minnesota would become another California under DFL control. He said his top issues are keeping government small. Pursell, seeking her third term in the Minnesota House of Representatives, said she wanted to focus in on water policy and addressing large water usage. This includes data centers, but Pursell said she wanted to extend it to all large water users, particularly Elko New Market’s Niagara Bottling Plant. Pursell pointed to her past work on the Cannon River watershed, including efforts that led to Rice Creek being delisted from the state’s impaired waters list. She won with 12,523 votes.

Fairmont Lakes Foundation’s Annual Meeting Held Last Week

(Fairmont) – Funding for watershed projects and the future of lake improvements were among the topics discussed Thursday during the Fairmont Lakes Foundation’s annual meeting. Speakers included representatives from the Shell Rock River Watershed District and Minnesota Watersheds, who shared how funding has helped improve water quality in the Albert Lea area. The Shell Rock River Watershed District has received approximately 86-million dollars in grants and other funding since 2003. Projects have included dredging Fountain Lake, reducing phosphorus runoff, improving fish habitat and storing floodwater. The meeting also focused on the possibility of establishing a separate watershed district and improving Fairmont’s representation in regional watershed planning. Fairmont City Councilor Britney Kawecki raised concerns that the city does not have a voice on the Greater Blue Earth River Basin Alliance after deciding not to pay membership dues. About 40 people attended the meeting at Southern Minnesota Educational Campus.

Medford pool could still be closed for the 2027 season

During Monday’s meeting, the Medford City Council waded into turbulent waters while considering alternate courses of action regarding the Medford pool and sources of recreation next summer for the city’s children. Last month the Medford City Council voted to close the pool for the 2027 season in order to make necessary and long overdue repairs. However, as the council anticipated, the community was more than a little displeased with the decision as some were left wondering why the repairs didn’t begin immediately following the 2026 pool season with others criticizing the manner in which the pool has been maintained and winterized. City Administrator Elizabeth Jackson addressed the criticism, saying that the decision to close the pool was among the most difficult she has had to make in her decade with the city, but that, contrary to public sentiment, the closure will not be permanent. Jackson disputed claims that the city knew that the repairs needed to be made prior to opening for the 2026 season, stating they became aware when the pool staff began noticing significant water loss, which led them to run a hose overnight to avoid running the pool’s pumps dry. “The pool needs to be fixed and
