Westonka tops state districts in reading, math

Westonka Public Schools ranked first in Minnesota in overall reading and math proficiency, according to 2026 state assessment results released by the Minnesota Department of Education on Sept. 30. Mark Femrite, assistant superintendent for Teaching and Learning, presented the results to the Westonka School Board at its Oct. 12 meeting. The rankings include districts that tested at least 100 students per grade level. The results reflect the percentage of students scoring proficient or above on Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments and Minnesota Test of Academic Skills assessments. Westonka ranked first statewide in reading for grades three, four, five and seven and in math for grades four, five and seven. The district also ranked fifth statewide in science proficiency and placed in the top five on 13 of 17 state assessments. Femrite attributed the results to strong classroom instruction and teachers’ efforts to engage students and address individual needs. The district also hosted community roundtables Oct. 27 and 28 focused on construction, machining and health care careers. The discussions brought together educators, industry professionals and community members to learn about the courses, tour Westonka High School’s new lab spaces and discuss ways to support students. St. Peter Community Center to receive indoor playground

A proposal to bring an indoor playground to the St. Peter Community Center is moving forward on a divided vote. In a 5-2 decision, the St. Peter City Council backed a measure to spend $101,000 on the purchase of an indoor playground geared towards ages 5 to 12. A climbable course equipped with a slide and obstacles to squeeze through, the facility offers kids opportunities to climb, play and stay active during the long Minnesota winter. While council members generally agreed on the need for more indoor recreational opportunities for children, the debate centered on whether the proposed playground would provide enough value for its cost and if the city should save its cash for a more ambitious playground in the future. Recreation Director Ryan Yunkers said the playground would fill a gap in the Community Center’s existing recreational offerings, particularly for children who have outgrown Creative Play Place, which primarily serves toddlers and younger children. State Rep. Kristi Pursell, DFL, and Republican challenger Steve Cherney met Tuesday night at the Lonsdale Area Chamber of Commerce candidate forum, where questions on fraud, immigration and the state’s biggest issues drew sharp contrasts between the two. Fairmont City Council Gets Preview of Upcoming Street Improvements

FAIRMONT — Tyler Cowing, Fairmont’s Civil Engineer, presented the city council with 2027 street improvements for the coming year in hopes of getting bids in earlier. Cowing says the proposed projects include reconstructing Fairview Avenue from First to Fourth Street and Parkwood Place near Amber Lake Drive. Both streets are in poor condition, with Parkwood Place also receiving new curb and gutter to improve drainage. The total cost is estimated at 3-point-2 million dollars, including several sealcoat projects. The city plans to cover the costs through assessments, utility funds and bonding. The council approved the engineering report and scheduled a public hearing for November 23rd at 5:30 p.m. Council members also unanimously approved applying for a one-point-five-million-dollar state grant for reconstruction of Albion Avenue from State Street to Cedar Street.

ISD 111 board chair represents state board in D.C. trip

Watertown-Mayer School Board Chair Hunter Feldt traveled to Washington, D.C., in late September to represent the Minnesota School Boards Association at the Consortium of State School Boards Associations’ Federal Advocacy Conference. The trip included meetings with Minnesota’s congressional delegation. Feldt and fellow school board members from across the state urged lawmakers to address federal issues affecting public schools, students, families and staff. “One of my biggest points of pride was talking about Watertown-Mayer,” Feldt said. “I wanted to make sure our legislators understand how federal decisions show up in our classrooms every single day.” The conversations focused on three issues affecting Watertown-Mayer: internet access, special education funding and student mental health.
