CLIO (WWJ) - Two people and one suspect are dead in a domestic violence incident that escalated into a shootout with police at a Genesee County apartment complex on Tuesday night.

Chief Wendel Millstead with the Clio Police Department told WWJ that officers and Genesee County Sheriff's Deputies responded to an apartment complex in the 600 block of N. Mill Street just after 7:30 p.m. for a domestic incident with shots fired.

When law enforcement arrived, they found a woman shot on the steps of the building. They were then met by a man wielding a shotgun who walked into the street and began open firing on police.

Officers and deputies returned fire before the suspect was struck. He was immediately treated at the scene and taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Both female victim and a male victim, found in the apartment during a sweep, were pronounced dead at the scene.

No officers or bystanders were injured in the incident and police said there is no threat to the community.

An investigation into the shooting is being conducted jointly by the Clio Police Department, the Genesee County Sheriff's Office and Michigan State Police.

The identities of the victims and the suspect are pending at this time. No other details were released.
