Utica murder defendant ruled fit to proceed in court, rejects plea offer
UTICA — A 51-year-old man accused of beating his roommate to death has been ruled fit to proceed to trial in Oneida County Court. Matthew Johnston appeared before Judge Robert L. Bauer Friday morning, more than a year after Johnston had previously been ruled mentally unfit following the Jan. 11, 2023 death of 59-year-old Khame A. Boman. Johnston underwent a year of treatment in a state mental health facility, and court officials said he has since been ruled mentally competent to proceed with his case.

Rome community rallies to help dogs find their ‘fur-ever’ home
ROME — The City of Rome and the Humane Society of Rome have rallied the community to come together for a good cause. Both agencies took over the Kennedy Arena at 500 West Embargo St. in Rome on Saturday, where dozens of dogs could be seen wagging their tails and barking in excitement to meet their future families and find their “fur-ever” homes. The event was a way to showcase the many animals that both the city and the human society are sheltering, and to seek out people and families looking to adopt.
History center hosts Mother's Day Sip & Paint event in Utica
UTICA — Oneida County History Center, 1608 Genesee St., is bringing back its popular Sip and Paint event from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, May 11 for Mother’s Day weekend. Participants will paint a landscape featuring the picturesque and historic Verona Beach lighthouse from Oneida Lake. An instructor will lead attendees in creating their version of the featured painting while sipping and enjoying the company of other painters. Utica man sentenced on federal fentanyl charges
SYRACUSE, NY (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) — A Utica man learned his fate in federal court on Wednesday, May 1 after pleading guilty to fentanyl possession charges. 38-year-old Eric Ares of Utica was sentenced to ten years in federal prison for consipiring to possess and distribute fentanyl on Wednesday, according to United States Attorney Carla Freedman. Ares pled guilty in an earlier appearance in the Syracuse Federal Court.
