1 dead after attempting to carjack Amazon delivery vehicle

The Cleveland Division of Police is investigating a shooting incident that occurred on Saturday afternoon that left one person dead.

Around 4 p.m., an Amazon delivery driver was approached by someone who attempted to carjack the delivery vehicle near the intersection of West 48th Street and Franklin Avenue, Cleveland Police said.

During the interaction, police said shots were fired, and the person drove away in the delivery driver's vehicle and crashed shortly after.

Resident, Tatiana Gracyk said before roundabouts were installed on Franklin, crashes happened frequently, but this latest incident is unusual.

"We have the music up, I am about a block away and I didn’t hear anything, which is a little surprising because the car crashes are often pretty loud," Gracyk said.

EMS on the scene pronounced the person dead, police said.

Another bystander, Harvey Graff, was staying at the Bed & Breakfast on the corner of the intersection. He also didn't hear shots fired or cars crashing.

"It’s catastrophic either way," said Graff. "I am more concerned as a sponsor of reasonable gun control."

The person's cause of death is unknown at this time. News 5 has reached out to Amazon for a comment, and we are waiting to hear back. The shooting remains under investigation by Cleveland Police.
