Denver is being overrun by gas stations, city officials said Monday, and it may be time to regulate and even limit them. The Budget and Policy Committee of the City Council heard a presentation by staff members of City Council members Amanda Sawyer, Paul Kashmann and Diana Romero-Campbell. “Gas stations in the City and County of Denver have few limitations and regulations, especially regarding health and safety of the surrounding neighbors,” according to the presentation. “Multiple constituents have contacted council offices concerned with the amount of new gas stations being constructed near already existing gas stations and nearby neighborhoods.”

For the second year in a row, Denver has ranked high on a listing of cities with bed bug infestations. It came in 15th from among more than 400 cities analyzed for problems with the blood suckers by the website Pest Gnome. The site crunched numbers regarding population density, number of multi-unit buildings and access to exterminators. From among the more than 400 cities ranked, Denver landed at 22nd for the number of accommodations, ninth for the average monthly Google searches for bed bug-related keywords during the past year, and 131st for population density.

Migrants Willy Bastidas and a woman named Mandy shared stories of shelter conditions. They said migrants are being kicked out after three days with nowhere to go.

The Denver City Council approved a contract Monday with Catholic Charities and Community Services of the Archdiocese of Denver to operate the Mullen Home as shelter for pregnant migrant families. The contract will run through the end of 2024.

The Denver City Council learned more Wednesday about the workforce development component of the Denver Asylum Seekers Program. The city has transitioned the way it helps migrants, closing shelters and instead placing 800 people in the asylum program. That includes people who had been staying in non-congregate hotel shelters, all but one of which have closed. New migrant arrivals will not be eligible for the six-month work program until some graduate, according to a presentation by city staff. The city intends to keep 500 people in the work program at a time, according to Tony Anderson, workforce development manager for the city.
