(WJW) – A 26-year-old Cleveland man, who was driving his grandmother’s car, is behind bars after leading four police departments on a long, slow-speed chase across the west-side suburbs.

Nathaniel Blevins, 26, has been charged with OVI and Failure to Comply. Westlake police charged him but Avon officers took him into custody and he has been booked into Lorain County Jail.

Police said, the scene started when Westlake officers tried to pull over Blevins for a missing tail light on I-90. Instead of pulling over, police said, he got off the interstate in Avon.

Avon police saw him and tried to pull him over around 12:45 a.m. on Wednesday. Again, instead of pulling over, police said, the suspect drove off at the slow speed of just 12 miles-per-hour.

The 26-year-old went down Chester Road, to Route 611 and ended up on Lake Road. Police officers from Bay Village, Avon Lake, and Westlake joined the chase as Blevins made his way down Lake Road for an hour and a half.

Avon police were able to blow out one Blevin’s tires with stopsticks. Avon Lake police tried to take out more tires and Bay Village police were also prepared with stopsticks.

Eventually, police said, Blevins turned off Lake Road onto Cahoon Road.  A police officer hit Blevin’s car with a police cruiser causing Blevins to spin out, but police said, he still kept driving. Then shortly after, another officer hit Blevin’s vehicle with a cruiser causing Blevins to crash the car in Westlake. That’s when police were finally able to make the arrest around 2:15 a.m. on Wednesday.

Police said, they do not know why Blevins did not pull over. As of right now, they do not see that he had any warrants out for his arrest. Blevins was driving his grandmother’s car, said police.

Avon Police said they continued to follow Blevins because of public safety concerns. They said Blevins was running through stop lights and ignoring traffic signals.
