The dust is settling on the 2024 college basketball spring transfer window and Clemson came out alright to say the least.
Head coach Brad Brownell is coming off the heels of the best NCAA Tournament run of his career and it showed up in the transfer portal with two commitments. This didn’t come without some departures, and here’s a quick refresher.
Departures
G Josh Beadle
G Alex Hemenway
F RJ Godfrey
F Jack Clark
Arrivals
G Jaeden Zackery
F Viktor Lakhin
Looking at the losses, the Tigers will have to retool the frontcourt. Both Godfrey and Clark won’t be easy to replace but Brownell landing Lakhin was a big step forward.
The Russian big averaged 9.2 points and 6.0 rebounds last season. He’ll likely take over the center spot for PJ Hall. Paired with Ian Schieffelin, that will be the new look up front. Another step in Chauncey Wiggins’ development would make a big impact as he’s the most experienced member of the frontcourt beyond those two.
There’s still questions to be answered in the backcourt. Chase Hunter’s potential return looms but landing ACC transfer Jaeden Zackery was massive for the future. He led Boston College’s offense with 11.3 points and 4.2 assists per game. Hunter’s decision will make this picture clearer.
Losing four players compared to adding two may be misleading, and getting two true starters in the portal is a massive success.
Brownell may not be done though. While the portal window closes, there’s still names that could await announcement and many that haven’t made a decision on a new home. Clemson got two experienced producers that will pay dividends as the Tigers ride the momentum of its best season of the century.
