Dylan Hoy did the trash talking Saturday after his home run in the seventh inning helped Louisville down No. 5 Clemson. On Sunday, the Tigers came in on a mission and let their bats do the talking.

Clemson scored 12 runs on 12 hits in the first three innings Sunday in route to a 17-7 victory over Louisville at Patterson Stadium in Louisville, Ky.

The Tigers came into Sunday’s game fired up because of Hoy’s antics around the bases following his seventh inning home run on Saturday. Clemson head coach Erik Bakich even expressed his disapproval for Hoy’s actions when he spoke to the ESPN2 broadcast crew during Sunday’s game.

During Hoy’s first at-bat Clemson pitcher Billy Barlow threw behind him to send a message that they did not appreciate what happened on Saturday. Home plate umpire, Mike Jarboe, immediately warned both dugouts not do anymore.

That stayed true until the seventh inning, when Clemson’s Jimmy Obertop (2-for-5, 3 RBIs) flipped the bat towards the Louisville dugout and then stared at them after he launched a two-run bomb to centerfield, which ultimately ended the game.

When Obertop touched home plate, Jarboe ejected him from the game for taunting. Bakich immediately came out of the Clemson dugout to protest the ruling.

Obertop will have to sit out Clemson’s next game.

The Tigers scored four runs in the first inning, three in the second and five in the third inning. They brought eight batters to the plate in the first, six in the second and 10 in the third inning.

Everyone in Clemson’s lineup to start the game, recorded at least one hit by the fourth inning. Jacob Hinderleider led the way with a 3-for-4 afternoon at the plate, including a career-high six RBIs. Alden Mathis had four hits and one RBI.

Cam Cannarella drove in three runs on a 3-for-3 day, while Tristan Bissetta had two RBIs and was 2-for-5 at the plate. In all, seven different players drove in a run for Clemson, as the Tigers run ruled the Cardinals in seven innings.

The Tigers (34-9, 15-6 ACC) avenged Saturday’s one-run loss to the Cardinals to win the series. They also won Game 1 of the series.

Clemson took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Cannarella and Jimmy Obertop hit back-to-back RBI doubles to rightfield and then Bissetta drilled a two-run home run to left field.

The score increased to 7-0 in the top of the second. Hinderleider hit a two-run homer to centerfield with one out, while Cannarella launched a solo bomb to leftfield.

After Louisville scored a run in the bottom of the second, the Tigers responded with five runs on four hits in the top of third, including a base-clearing, three-run triple from Hinderleider.

Purify and Mathis recorded single RBIs in the third inning as well, as Clemson built its lead to 12-1 after three innings. Clemson got another RBI single from Hinderleider in the third inning for a 13-1 advantage.

Louisville (25-18, 10-11 ACC) got single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, including a solo home run to left field in the fifth inning by Isaac Humphrey.

The Cardinals cut the lead to 13-7 with four more runs in the sixth inning. However, Clemson answered with four runs of its own in the top of the seventh.

The Tigers used three hits, including a sacrifice from Blake Wright, another RBI double by Cannarella and Obertop’s two-run bomb to straightaway center to ultimately end the game.

Clemson finished the game with 18 hits.

    DID NOT PITCH

Regular Sunday starter, Aiden Knaak, did not play in the game. No official word on why he was not available to pitch in Game 3. Knaak has not allowed an earned run in his last 27 innings of work.
