TPS and administrators sued for alleged abuse, assault on students
Two separate lawsuits have been filed against Toledo Public Schools and administrators alleging that special-needs children were assaulted and physically abused while in school during May, 2023. One lawsuit was filed on behalf of a mother whose son suffered dental damage allegedly at the hands of a Robinson Elementary School classroom paraprofessional after he misbehaved in class, while the other was brought by a mother who says her 9-year-old son suffered facial injuries after being thrown across a room by his special-education teacher at Spring Elementary School. In the Robinson case, the plaintiff said the school nurse substitute who contacted her May 10, 2023, initially downplayed the incident’s severity while asking the plaintiff to come to school to pick up her son. When the plaintiff asked whether she could wait until the end of the school day, the nurse told her he had several broken teeth. According to the lawsuit, the nurse completed an incident report based on a narrative from one of two paraprofessionals in the classroom who described the other paraprofessional grabbing the boy by the back of his neck and slamming his face into his desk after the boy refused to sit properly in his chair.
