The Clanton City Council held its first meeting of the month on May 13 as a previously unnamed city street was given a name as part of the rulings handed down by the council.

Resolution 2024-05-13-07 was approved unanimously by the council that authorized the city street that connects Greasy Ridge Road and 7th Street South to be renamed to W.H. Thomas Lane. W.H. Thomas Lane ends directly across from W.H. Thomas Oil as the road bearing the company’s name will take people directly to the business.

Ordinance No. 2024-08 was passed at the meeting that repealed and replaced certain language in the regulation of mobile food units in the City of Clanton. Ordinance 2022-06 was adopted by the council on Feb. 28, 2022, and Ordinance 2024-08 will still use a majority of the language, such as inspections, permits and license requirements, in its summary. The meeting rules were suspended to approve the ordinance at the same meeting as the first reading of it, which passed unanimously.

“The intention and emphasis of ordinance 2024-08 is to ease the burden of current and prospective businesses, and encourage them to visit and stay in Clanton, Alabama,” Clanton Councilmember Billy Singleton stated in an overview of the ordinance during the meeting prior to voting on it.

Also, during the meeting, the council:

    • Approved Ordinance 2024-07 following the second reading that will change land owned by Frances Payton at 1901 Lay Dam Road from the present zoning AG Agricultural District to B-2 General Businesses District.
    • Authorized a cooperative maintenance agreement with the State of Alabama, approved a change order from Tyler Technologies, Inc. for software services, approved an ABC Special Event License application for The Bearded Peach, LLC and entered into agreement with Alabama Pyrotechnics, LLC for the fireworks display on July 4 at 9 p.m.
    • Approved updates to the council meeting schedule to reflect meetings on May 23 and July 18, both starting at 5 p.m.
