Bengals rookie Jermaine Burton is already being made into a better receiver thanks to Joe Burrow

The newest drafted wide receiver for the Cincinnati Bengals is gaining a lot of valuable experience this month as two of the elder receivers on the roster are not practicing with the team.

Sure, Jermaine Burton would prefer to be joined by Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins during the lead up to OTAs next week, but their absence means he's getting more attention (and targets) from quarterback Joe Burrow.

"I'd rather both [Chase and Higgins] be here now," Burton admitted Tuesday afternoon. "But it's also been good working with Joe. Get any kind of reps and stuff like that. I just look forward to keep doing it. Keep working."

Burton's speed and hands have been on display ever since he first put on a practice jersey during rookie minicamp. Running against air can make most players of his caliber look great, but it's the little details that end up mattering when defenders begin to occupy the air he's running against.

Advice from the quarterback is sure to go a long way.

"It's huge," Burton said of developing a rapport with Burrow. "That's the man. I like learning how he likes certain things and details on certain routes. And he does a really good job explaining how he wants it and how it should be.

Timing between quarterback and receiver is built through time itself. More reps together means more familiarity and trust. But a quarterback who's direct and engaging can expedite the process as well.

Earlier this week, Burrow was seen showing Burton how to better break off his route against coverage and create more separation. The team's X/Twitter account was able to capture the entire lesson:

The coaches aren't the only coaches on the field. Burrow has a responsibility as the quarterback to help his teammates and point them in the right direction towards helping him.

Burton is already an elite athlete and a natural hands catcher. If he's developing into a more refined route runner with the ability to utilize leverage against cornerbacks, he'll be a more lethal weapon for Burrow than previously imagined.

And we're still in May.

Not many players in Cincinnati are learning more than Burton right now. The 22-year old is taking coaching from several different angles, and is taking on a larger role than he may have in OTAs and training camp when at least Chase returns.

The sooner he gets on the same page with Burrow, the better. The wheels are definitely spinning already.
