Padres bats silenced by Reds

The Padres dropped their fifth straight game on Monday night, losing to the Reds 4-1. Elly De La Cruz's solo shot in top of the 1st inning gave the Reds an early lead, the Padres answered right back in the bottom of the 1st on a leadoff homer from Jurickson Profar. Unfortunately, that would be all the offense the Padres would be able to muster, as Reds starter Nick Lodolo overwhelmed them. After issuing the leadoff home run to Profar, Lodolo retired 21 consecutive hitters without allowing a hit, including the final 18 hitters consecutively without reaching base after issuing two walks to begin the 2nd inning. Lodolo struck out 11 Padres in total over 7 innings while allowing just one run.

Things got interesting with 2 outs in the 9th inning with the score 5-1 after Reds closer Alexis Diaz retired Jurickson Profar and Fernando Tatis Jr. to begin the inning. Jake Cronenworth hit a double into the right-center field gap for the Padres' first hit since Profar's leadoff home run in the 1st inning. Manny Machado then drove Cronenworth in with an opposite-field single to make it 5-2. Xander Bogaerts reached first on a throwing error by De La Cruz to bring the potential tying run to the plate in Ha-Seong Kim. But it wasn't to be, as Kim struck out to end the game.
