CHISHOLM—An evening shining a star on the talents of all areas of Bluestreak art is being held at Chisholm High School.

The spring art show is from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 8 with displays throughout the lower level of the school. A spring concert featuring the Chisholm High School Band follows at 7 p.m. in the historic Chisholm High School Auditorium.

Displays include a variety of art projects, welding, woodworking, along with food created by culinary students, and a concert featuring musicians with the Chisholm High School Band. There is no admission charge.

Family and Friends can purchase an art star for $1 to leave an art star comment for their artist. There are a limited number of art stars available.

“All students grades seventh through 12th who took art this year will be displaying their creative efforts,” Art instructor Betsy Carroll wrote in an email earlier this week.

Industrial Art Teachers Tim Provinzino and Jamey Johnson provided some insight on displays from their department, also involving work by students in seventh through 12th grade.

Provinzino said displays from his students include bookcases, coffee tables and nightstands.

“There will also be some Laser Engraver and CNC router projects,” Provinzino said.

Johnson said fire pits and signs created by the advanced welding class will be on display, along with stools and a table created by the metal and wood fabrication class.

“We are showing some welding and plasma cutting skills the 10-12 grade students learned throughout the year,” Johnson added.

While viewing the art show, attendees will have an opportunity to sample appetizers prepared by students in Lynnette Purdy’s Transitions class. There are nine students in the class, and they are working on independent living skills for use after graduating high school, Purdy said.

“This year’s group is all seniors and have been working on everything from budgeting, job skills, cooking skills and post-secondary education opportunities,” Purdy wrote in an email on Tuesday. “This event allows them to put their cooking skills together with the soft skills that we have been practicing to be successful in the work environment.”

“This is a great group of kids and I will be sad when they leave, but this is an opportunity for them to show everyone how awesome they are,” Purdy added.

Chisholm High School Band Director Ryan Freitas, in an email earlier this week, shared information on the band’s upcoming performance.

“We will have a fun slate of music to perform,” Freitas said. “Spring concerts often feature pops music, and we will follow suit with this performance.”

Freitas said the concert on May 8 will include musical selections from movies, television, musicals and more.

“The Jazz Band will lead off with a rendition of Henry Mancini’s “The Pink Panther,” and finish with “Moondance” made famous by Van Morrison,” he said. “The Junior High Band will perform the “Hogan’s Heroes March” from the class TV show, as well as selections from “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” and “Fiddler on the Roof.” Finally, the Senior High Band will perform “Star Wars,” with a selection of music from the prequel trilogy—my personal favorite, “Phantom of the Opera,” and music from video games, entitled “Video Games Live.”

“It should be a wonderful concert!” Freitas assured.
