CHIPLEY, Fla. ( WMBB ) — The Whitewater Lake campsite was heavily damaged during Hurricane Michael and has been closed to the public ever since.

The Northwest Florida Water Management District invited a group of Florida Power and Light employees to help them get the Chipley campground reopened.

A dozen volunteers laid down sod, built fences and trashcans, and added grills to the site.

The campgrounds reopened on Wednesday afternoon.

“Our children grow up here and they want to use these facilities. My son James, is a student at the University of West Florida so he comes out when he’s between classes, and he helps us out on all the work days that he can participate in. So, I feel like at FPL, we’re pushing that generation to the next,” Florida Power and Light Senior Environmental Specialist Jeff Cole said.

Whitewater Lake is the last of 15 campsites that were damaged by Michael and are now reopened.
