Born 96 Years Ago Today on the Texas Gulf Coast, the 50s Rock Legend Behind Novelty Hits and George Jones’ First No. 1
On this day (October 24) in 1930, Jiles Perry “J.P.” Richardson Jr. was born in Sabine Pass, Texas. Forever immortalized as “The Big Bopper”, he went on to become one of the early pioneers of rock and roll with beloved novelty hits like the self-penned “Chantilly Lace”. As much a songwriter as he was a singer and entertainer, Richardson also penned the classic track “White Lightnin’”, which a then little-known singer named George Jones took to the top of the charts in 1959. It marked the first of 13 career number-one hits for the country star.

Album Review – Pug Johnson’s “From a Beaumont Bar”
Honky Tonk (#510.2) on the Country DDS. It’s not uncommon these days for new country songs coming down the pike to sound like the country songs of old. We’ve been so fortunate to experience a rebirth of the tones and modes that originally made country music so great. But the problem is that so often, these songs still don’t feel like the songs of old. Even when they get the general sentiments right, they still don’t have the same pull on the soul of the old classics because the intent is to emulate instead of putting forth the effort to find new ways to express very old feelings and experiences.
