Kansas Turnpike Authority plans expansion of I-70 north and east of Lawrence

An upcoming project will expand Interstate 70 to six lanes in parts of Douglas and Leavenworth counties and replace two overhead bridges as part of a $136.6 million contract. A 9-mile stretch of the highway will be widened from four lanes. That stretch is between mile markers 204.5, which is near I-70’s North Lawrence interchange, and 213.5, which is east of town between Linwood to the south and Tonganoxie to the north.

Kansas sees surge in early voting for midterm race

This year's mid-term election has seen a surge of Kansas voters casting ballots in person in advance, including in Shawnee County. Wyandotte County in northeast Kansas reports early voting has more than tripled. Advance voting began Oct. 19 and will continue through Nov. 2. The Kansas Secretary of State’s office reported on its website that 161,838 Kansans had voted in person and 42,317 had cast mail ballots as of Oct. 26, meaning 204,155 Kansans had voted in advance. The state had sent out 103,679 mail ballots, with 40.82% of those having been returned, that site said. Registered voters in Shawnee County may cast advance ballots from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 27-30 and 8 a.m. to noon Nov. 2 at the Shawnee County Election Office, 3420 SW Van Buren St. Early voter turnout nearly doubled some days in Shawnee County Andrew Howell, Shawnee County election commissioner, said his office has seen an uptick in early-voter turnout. Reno County voters hit the polls for early election turnout
