CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – May 5th is of course Cinco de Mayo, a holiday that celebrates the Mexican victory over the French 2nd Empire at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.

And there were celebrations throughout western Massachusetts including in Chicopee Sunday afternoon where The Michael J. Dias Foundation hosted its 2nd Annual “Cinco de Cornhole” tournament.

Dozens of people came by the Portuguese American Club to have some fun playing their favorite backyard game while raising money at the same time.

“It is to support sober living,” said Candy Laflam of Easthampton. “So we did a charity tournament here on Cinco De Mayo called ‘Cinco De Cornhole’ today so we had a bunch of people play.”

Many local Mexican restaurants also held special events throughout the day where Mexican American’s got the chance to celebrate their heritage.
