(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — New figures from the U.S. Census Bureau paint what may be a clearer picture of population shifts in the region. Some local leaders aren’t buying the results.

The latest results reflect a national trend, with cities and near-suburbs losing residents and communities farther from population centers gaining. These are figures compiled between April 2020 to July 2023.

Chicago reportedly lost about 82,000 people. That’s 3% of the population, now at about 2.6 million, according to the census.

Cook County communities outside the city lost 188,000 people. They include Cicero, Riverside, Oak Lawn, Dolton and Palos Heights.

Meanwhile, Yorkville, Plainfield and Oswego saw growth.

Oak Lawn Mayor Terry Vorderer told the Tribune he’s not buying the new estimates. He said he’s “shocked” and “skeptical.”

The Governor JB Pritzker’s administration also told the Tribune that they don’t believe the figures are accurate, either.

It's estimated Illinois lost about 264,000 residents, or 2% over that 3-year period to a total of about 12.5-million.

The latest figures are based on births, deaths and moves. Migrants are not included.
